Emotions in Jeremiah, Chapter 43

Defiance and Rebellion

The chapter begins with Johanan and the people rejecting Jeremiah’s message from God. They accuse Jeremiah of lying and conspiring with Baruch to deliver them into the hands of the Babylonians, displaying a strong sense of defiance and rebellion against divine guidance (Jeremiah 43:1-3).

Fear and Escape

Driven by fear of Babylonian retribution, Johanan and the leaders decide to lead the people, including Jeremiah, into Egypt, seeking refuge despite God’s explicit command to stay in Judah. This decision highlights their desperation and fear, choosing what they perceive as safety over obedience (Jeremiah 43:4-7).

Prophecy and Forewarning

Upon reaching Egypt, Jeremiah delivers another prophecy, forewarning of the coming invasion by Nebuchadnezzar, who will conquer Egypt as well. This prophecy evokes a sense of impending doom and the inevitable consequences of their disobedience (Jeremiah 43:8-13).
